The Grey long-eared bat occurs all over Hungary, smaller colonies can be found in buildings. A decrease was observed in the Hungarian population in the last few years. We would like to raise attention on this species via selecting it as "the bat of the year 2009".

The vanishing of the foraging areas of the species, insecticides, artificial lighting and closing the flyways of the roosting buildings, the use of toxic wood conserving materials are all threatening the species' population.

Bats are not birds!

Bats belong to mammals. They are the only mammals which can fly in an active way.

Bats in Hungary do not suck blood!

All of the 28 bat species living in Hungary feeding on arthropods, they eat a lot of mosquitos and other insect pests. Only three bat species which are living in South and Middle America are feeding on blood.

Bats do not enmesh into human hair!

The Bükk Mammalogical Society is looking for sponsors. We would like to obtain research equipment and to pay full/part time employee(s) to conduct research work. Unfortunately we lack several research equipment and we cannot pay salary since 2006.

The Bükk Mammalogical Society was founded in the early 1990's. Our main aim is to find and save the valuable small mammal populations of the research area
The Society consists of young researchers and local people who are interested in mammalogy.
The core area of our activity are the Bükk Mountains and Borsodi-Mezőség, but our research extends to other reagions such as Mátra Mountains, Heves-Borsodi-Hilly Country, Medves Mountains and Zemplén Mountains.

The Parti-coloured bats of the male colony

A few years ago P. Gombkötő discovered the first Hungarian colony of Parti-coloured bats. In the summer of 2006 we visited the colony. It was not observed till then whether is it a male colony -which is not rare in the case of this species- or a female colony. We conducted a mist-netting near the roost and noted this is a male colony.

In 2006 a nursing colony was discovered in the Zempléni Mountains.
